स्टायलबाज गैर.. स्पृहा जोशी [Loksatta; Mumbai Vruttanata] 28th Oct 2009

प्रेक्षक आणि समीक्षक यांना जिंकून घेणारे ‘मृगजळ’, ‘एक डाव धोबी पछाड’सारखे चित्रपट आणि ‘असंभव’, ‘अग्निहोत्र’सारख्या मालिकांचा दिग्दर्शक सतीश राजवाडे याची वेगळी ओळख करून द्यायलाच नको. त्याच्या कामातील ताजेपणा, स्टाइल आणि डॅशिंग व्यक्तिमत्व यामुळे आजची अवघी तरुणाई सतीशची फॅन आहे. त्याने दिग्दर्शित केलेला ‘गैर’ हा बिग बजेट चित्रपट लवकरच रिलीज होत आहे. त्यानिमित्ताने सतीश सोबत केलेल्या या मनमोकळया गप्पा.
‘गैर’चं वैशिष्टय़ काय सांगशील?
आजचा विषय, तरुणाईला भावणारी स्टाइल, थ्रिल, अ‍ॅक्शन आणि संगीत हे ‘गैर’चे सगळ्यात मोठे वैशिष्टय़. ‘दिल चाहता हैं’ जशी हिंदीतील ‘कल्ट फिल्म’ ठरली, त्याचप्रमाणे ‘गैर’ ही मराठीतील ‘कल्ट फिल्म’ ठरेल असे मला वाटते. कारण त्यानुसारच या फिल्मचे स्टायलिंग केलेले आहे.
आपले मराठी हीरो हे हिंदी चित्रपटांत नोकर, विनोदी अभिनेते, फारफारतर हिरोचा मित्र अशा दुय्यम भूमिकांमध्येच का दिसतात? कोणाबद्दलही कुठल्याही प्रकारचा अनादर
अजिबातच मनात नाही. पण जास्त क्षमता असूनही आपण मागे का राहतो? आधी मुळात हीरो सारखे त्यांना प्रेझेन्ट केले जाते का? असे प्रश्न मला नेहमी सतावतात. ‘गैर’मधून मी हाच समज बदलण्याचा प्रयत्न करतोय. मराठीमध्ये ही एका नवीन ट्रेण्डची सुरुवात आहे, असे मला वाटते. कलाकारांचे कॉश्चुम्स, अगदी त्यांच्या शूजपासून ते गॉगल्सपर्यंत प्रत्येक गोष्ट खास स्टाइल्ड आहे आणि आज आपल्या फिल्म्सना अशा स्टाइलचीच सगळ्यात जास्त गरज आहे.
फिल्म करताना कुठल्या प्रेक्षकवर्गाला खास डोळ्यासमोर ठेवले होते का?
नाही. खास प्रेक्षकवर्ग असा डोळ्यासमोर नव्हता. पण नेहमीच्या मध्यमवयीन प्रेक्षकांसोबत तरुणवर्ग माझ्या फिल्मकडे कसा वळेल, याबाबत मी खूप विचार केला होता. मराठी चित्रपटांकडे उत्तम विषय, दर्जेदार अभिनय हे सगळे असूनही प्रेक्षकवर्ग केवळ ‘४० वर्षापुढे’ असा सीमित का राहतोय? काय आणि कुठे कमी पडत आहे, ज्यामुळे तरुण याकडे पाठ फिरवतात? याचे उत्तर आहे प्रेझेन्टेशन, स्टाइल, थ्रिल. हे दिसतच नाही. कौटुंबिक सिनेमा आणि थ्रिलर यात तरुण अर्थातच थ्रिलर पाहणे पसंत करतात. म्हणूनच उत्तम कथाविषय असलेला थ्रिलर सिनेमा बनविण्याचे मी निश्चित केले. मला खात्री आहे की जेव्हा हिंदी चित्रपटांसोबत मल्टिप्लेक्समध्ये ‘गैर’ प्रदर्शित होईल, तेव्हा मराठी सिनेमाकडे पाठ फिरवणारा तरुणवर्ग ‘गैर’चा लूक पाहून स्वत:हून हा चित्रपट पहायला जाईल.
या चित्रपटाला एक यंग लूक यावा किंवा तरुणांनी स्वत:ला चित्रपटातील भूमिकांशी रिलेट करावे यासाठी काही खास प्रयत्न केले आहेत का?
नक्कीच. प्रत्येकाचा एक वेगळ्या स्टाइलचा वॉर्डरोब आहे. ही फिल्म कॉलेज गोअर्ससाठीही आहे.त्यांना आकर्षित करणारी रंगसंगती, वातावरणातील ताजेपणा यांकडे विशेष लक्ष दिले आहे. संदीप कुलकर्णी, अंकुश चौधरी, अमृता खानविलकर, तेजस्विनी पंडित हे सर्वानाच आवडतील असे कलाकार आहेत. त्यामुळे ‘ग्लॅमर कोशन्ट’ आहेच. त्यांनी अप्रतिम काम केले आहे. ‘गैर’च्या निमित्ताने माझ्याकडे दर्जेदार अभिनय आणि ग्लॅमर असा योग जुळून आला आहे. त्यामुळे मला खात्री आहे की तरुणवर्गाला हा प्रयोग नक्की भावेल.
आपण लक्ष देऊन पाहिले तर आतापर्यंत मराठी चित्रपटांचा फोकस हा साहित्यमूल्य, नैतिकता, संस्कार असा राहिला आहे. एखादा संदेश देणारे चित्रपट आपल्याकडे बनतात. यात वाईट काहीच नाही. कमी पडतेय ती विषय मांडण्याची पद्धत. ती एकसुरी झाल्यामुळे तरुणवर्ग स्वत:ला त्यांच्याशी रिलेट करू शकत नाही आणि त्यामुळेच आवडीने मराठी चित्रपटही पाहात नाहीत. ‘गैर’ची निर्मिती करताना मी हे भान सतत ठेवले होते. त्यामुळेच तरुणांना तो ‘त्यांचा’ चित्रपट वाटेल.
बऱ्याचदा तरुण मुले स्टाइलवर भाळताना विषयाकडे दुर्लक्ष करतात. त्यांची ही आवड चुकीची आहे असे वाटते का?
नाही. कारण मुळात आजकालची मुले विषयाकडे लक्ष देत नाहीत, हेच मला मान्य नाही. ती अतिशय जागरूक आहेत. फक्त त्यांचे म्हणणे आहे की, ते आमच्यापर्यंत योग्य पद्धतीने पोहोचवा. ही मागणी अगदीच योग्य आहे. बदलत्या काळानुसार विषय मांडण्याची पद्धत बदललीच पाहिजे. साधे उदाहरण सांगतो. १५ वर्षापूर्वीची फियाट आपण आजही आवडीने का वापरत नाही? मारुती, एस्टीम, झेन, सँट्रो, पॅलिओ असा बदल घडलाच ना. चित्रपटांचेही तसेच आहे. नवीन तंत्र, नवीन स्टाइल बदलत्या पिढीनुसार जर बदलत नसतील, तर आजच्या पिढीला ते कसे बघावसे वाटेल? आधी काय धडून गेले आहे आणि पुढे काय घडू शकेल याची वर्तमानाशी सांगड घातली, तर नक्कीच तरुण पिढीही त्याला मस्त प्रतिसाद देईल.
‘गैर’ करताना एक दिग्दर्शक म्हणून सर्वाधिक चॅलेंजिंग तुला काय वाटले होते?
‘गैर’ हा एक क्राईम थ्रिलर आहे. प्रत्येक पात्र एकमेकांत गुंफले गेले आहे. ‘अ‍ॅक्शन’पेक्षा ‘रिअ‍ॅक्शन’वरती सगळा चित्रपट बांधलाय. क्राईम थ्रिलरच्या वेगवान हाताळणीमध्ये एकही क्षण प्रेक्षकांना सिनेमा थांबल्यासारखा वाटू नये, हे अतिशय आव्हानात्मक होते. तसेच या ‘टेक्श्चर’चा चित्रपट मराठीतही होऊ शकतो हे आपल्या प्रेक्षकांना पटवून देणे हे आव्हान ‘गैर’ करताना होत.
एकांकिका स्पर्धामध्ये तू परीक्षक होतास, तेव्हा नवीन तरुणांचे काम बधून कसे वाटले?
या तरुणांचे भविष्य उज्ज्वल आहे. फक्त थोडासा पेशन्स कमी पडतोय. या क्षेत्रात काही करुन दाखवायचे असेल, तर ‘पेशन्स इज द की’. एका राक्षीत काहीच मिळत नाही. पण ज्या कल्पना आणि अप्रतिम सादरीकरण दिसून येत आहे, त्यावरून ‘फ्युचर इज रिअली ब्राईट’ असे मी नक्कीच म्हणू शकतो. एकांकिकांचे दिग्दर्शक, अभिनेते पॉलिश्ड होत आहेत, व्यावसायिक दर्जाचे काम करीत आहेत आणि त्यांच्यासोबत काम करायला मिळते, याचा मला आनंद आहे.
‘गैर’चे रिलीज जवळ आले असताना नेमके काय वाटतय?
नेहमीप्रमाणेच प्रत्येक रिलीजच्या आधी असते तसेच.. या फिल्मसाठी माझ्या निर्मात्यांपासून ते तंत्रज्ञांपर्यंत आणि अभिनेत्यांपासून माझ्या संपूर्ण टीमपर्यंत प्रत्येकानेच जीव तोडून मेहनत केली आहे. खूप मनापासून, प्रश्नमाणिकपणे केलेला प्रयत्न आहे. त्यामुळे सर्वाना माझी विनंती आहे की गैर आवर्जून पहा. सिनेमा आवडला तर कौतुक करायला आणि नाही आवडला तर स्पष्ट तसे सांगायला संकोच करु नका.

त्यात गैर काय? Mumbai times 21st Oct 2009

एकानेच दोन सिनेम सादर केलेत. एक हिंदी दुसरा मराठी. दोन्ही एकाच दिवशी रिलीज होतायत. 'जेल'समोर उभं ठाकण्यात 'गैर' काय?

हिंदीतला कितीही बडा निर्माता असला, तरी रिलीजच्या वेळेस त्याचा भर स्पर्धा टाळण्यावरच असतो. पण 'गैर'चे आणि 'जेल'चे सादरकतेर् असलेल्या संजय घोडावत यांनी हे दोन्ही सिनेमे एकाच दिवशी रिलीज करण्याचं धाडस केलंय. दोन दगडांवर पाय ठेवण्याचा ही रिस्क त्यांनी दोन्ही सिनेमांवर विश्वास असल्यामुळे घेतलीय म्हणे.

मराठी 'गैर' आणि हिंदी 'जेल' हे दोन महत्त्वाकांक्षी सिनेमे ६ नोव्हेंबरला रिलीज होतायत. 'जेल' हा मधुर भांडारकरचा सिनेमा. त्यामुळे चचेर्त असणारच. त्यातल्या पण झळकण्यापूवीर्च 'गैर'चीही भरपूर चर्चा सुरू आहे. संजय घोडावत ग्रुपची या दोन्ही सिनेमात महत्वाची भूमिका आहे. पण स्पधेर्ची शक्यता लक्षात घेऊनही त्यांनी हे दोन्ही सिनेमे एकाच दिवशी रिलीज करण्याचा निर्णय घेतलाय.


निर्माते जी. प्रशांत याबद्दल बोलताना म्हणाले की गैरच्या निमिर्तीत संजय घोडावत यांच मोठं सहकार्य आम्हाला लाभलं. मराठी सिनेमाच्या इतिहासात चॉपर वापरण्याचा हा बहुधा पहिलाच प्रयत्न असावा. एक कोटीचा सिनेमा अशी जाहिरात करणे वेगळं आणि पडद्यावर तो खर्च दिसणं वेगळं. 'गैर' हा सिनेमा एका जाहिरातक्षेत्रातल्या एका बड्या हस्तीच्या भोवती फिरतो. त्याचं ऊंची आयुष्य दाखवण्यासाठी खर्च आलायय अॅड र्वल्डचा सम्राट होंडा सिटीतून फिरतोय असं दाखवता येईल. पण आजचा मराठी प्रेक्षक ते स्वीकारणार नाही. म्हणून आम्ही सिनेमात फेरारी, मसिर्डीज आणि लेक्सस वापरली. सिनेमाचं बरच शूट एका आलिशान फार्म हाऊसवर झालंय, असं प्रशांत यांनी सांगितलं. सिनेमात दिसलेलं चॉपर, महागड्या गाड्या आणि आलिशान फार्महाऊस सगळंच घोडावत यांच्या मालकीचं. पण हे सगळं मिळूनही सिनेमाचं बजेट दोन आणि माकेर्टिंग धरून तीन कोटींच्यावर गेलं.

'गैर' हा सस्पेन्स थ्रीलर आहे. सिनेमात एका कमशिर्अल कॉम्प्लेक्सच्या दुसऱ्या मजल्यावरून संदीप कुलकणीर् उडी मारतो असं दृश्य आहे. संदीपने डुप्लिकेटचा वापर न करता हे दृश्य दिलंय. कास्टिंग करतानाही आम्ही सर्वच कलाकारांची लूक टेस्ट घेतली. गाण्यांसाठीही कुणाल गांजावाला, हरिहरन असे कलाकार घेतले. सिनेमाच्या श्रीमंतीसाठी आम्ही घेतलेलं कष्ट पडद्यावर दिसतीलच, असं ते सांगतात. हा सिनेमा जेलसमोर रिलीज होणार आहे. याच आम्हाला अजिबातच टेन्शन नाही. मराठी सिनेमा दजेर्दार असला तर मराठी प्रेक्षक त्याला उचलून धरतो, असा अनुभव आहे, असा विश्वास ते व्यक्त करतात.

तीन देशात प्रीमिअर
मराठी सिनेमा खऱ्या अर्थाने ग्लोबल करण्यासाठी टोराण्टो, लंडन आणि दुबई या तीन शहरांमध्ये 'गैर'चा प्रीमिअर शो करण्याचा प्रयत्न सुरू असल्याची माहिती निर्मात्यांनी दिली. ते पुढे म्हणालंे, आम्ही आणखी एक अभिनव प्रयोग करतो आहोत. 'गैर'च्या शूटिंगमध्ये सामील असणाऱ्या ४२ कलाकारांचा एका वर्षाचा आम्ही अपघात आणि मेडिकल इन्शुरन्स करून घेतला होता. मराठी सिनेमाच्या इतिहासात हे पहिल्यांदाच घडलं होतं.

Action, Thriller 'Gaiir' planned to hit theater after Diwali.


Marathi cinema which is growing day by day with improved technology as Hindi Cinema is coming again with new thriller movie name "Gaiir". Movie is well equipped with modern technology and methodology for picturisation. Sanjay Godwat group under Kruti picture banner is creating this movie. Movie is produced by Santosh Navale and Hashmukh Hirani and G .Prashant and directed by Satish Rajwade.

Movie website is already launched for viewers. Website was launched by renowned director S. Ramanathan who has been director for hindi cinemas and created good movies
like "Bombay to Goa", "Sabse bada Rupaiya" and "Mahan". Sandeep Kulkarni , Ankush Chawdary and Amrita Khanwilkar are playing key acting roles in the movie. Tejaswini Pandit, Uday Tikekar, Vidhyadhar Joshi, Ela Bhate, Amita Kopkar, Mahesh Joshi and Sandeep Pathak are also part of the movie.

This movie is no where less than Hindi movie and having good action and thriller part which can attract audience attraction. The story is written by Parag Kulkarni and Shirish Rajwade while dialogue are written by Parag Kulkarni. Song are written by Shriran Godbole while music is given by Vishwajeet- Avinash.Movie is picturized by Suresh Deshmane and choreograph by Umesh Jadhav and Rajesh Bidhave, while Mahesh Salgaonkar is the art director.

मराठी चित्रपटात प्रथमच फेरारी! 23rd Sept 2009 [Loksatta; Mumbai Vruttanta]

यश चोप्रश्न किंवा करण जोहर बॅनरच्या चित्रपटांतील नायकाच्या उत्पन्नाचा स्रोत कळत नाही, पण त्याच्याकडे असलेला गाडय़ांचा ताफा मात्र डोळ्यात भरण्यासारखा असतो. हिंदी चित्रपटांमध्ये सर्रास दिसणारी श्रीमंती आणि ग्लॅमर मराठीत फारसे दिसून येत नाही. येथील नायक हा मध्यमवर्गीय किंवा गावाकडील असतो. श्रीमंतीचा बडेजाव दाखविणारी व्यक्तिरेखा मराठीत अभावानेच दिसते. ही चाकोरी मोडून काढणाऱ्या सतीश राजवाडे दिग्दर्शित ‘गैर’ या चित्रपटात ‘फेरारी’, ‘मर्सिडिज’, ‘जॅग्वार’, ‘लेक्सस’, ‘ऑडी’ या गाडय़ा पाहायला मिळणार आहेत. चित्रपटातील बिझनेस टायकूनची व्यक्तिरेखा साकारलेल्या संदीप कुलकर्णीची एन्ट्रीट ‘फेरारी’मधून झाली आहे.
‘फेरारी’ चालविण्याची संदीपची ही पहिलीच वेळ. त्यामुळे ‘फेरारी’ पहिल्यांदा चालवली तो दिवस संदीपला आजही स्पष्ट आठवतो. संदीप म्हणाला की, दिवसभराच्या चित्रीकरणानंतर संध्याकाळी मी फेरारी चालवितानाचे दृश्य चित्रीत होणार होते. मी संध्याकाळची आतुरतेने वाट पाहात होतो. प्रकाश कमी असल्यामुळे त्या दिवशी हे दृश्य चित्रीत होईल की नाही, असा प्रश्न निर्माण झाला होता. पण अखेर ते दृश्य ठरलेल्या वेळी चित्रीत झाले. ‘फेरारी’चा आवाज आणि वेग दोन्हीही वेड लावणारा आहे. दुसऱ्या गिअरलाच गाडीचा वेग इतका वाढतो की त्यापुढचा गिअर टाकायचा असेल तर मोठी धावपट्टीच हवी. मी ‘फेरारी’त असताना माझ्या सहकलाकारांना माझा हेवा वाटत होता, असेही तो मिश्किलपणे म्हणाला.

चित्रपटाचे दिग्दर्शक सतीश राजवाडे यांनी सांगितले की, या चित्रपटाचे बजेट साधारण दीड ते पावणे दोन कोटी रुपयांच्या आसपास आहे. कथानकाची गरज म्हणूनच या सर्व गाडय़ा चित्रपटात वापरण्यात आल्या आहेत. केवळ गाडय़ाच नव्हे तर प्रत्येक व्यक्तिरेखेच्या कपडय़ांपासून ते मोबाइल फोनच्या रिंगटोनपर्यंत प्रत्येक गोष्ट बारकाईने निश्चित करण्यात आली आहे. चित्रपटाचा ‘लूक’ श्रीमंतीचा असल्यामुळे कथानकासाठी या गाडय़ांची आवश्यकताही होती. या चित्रपटाचे प्रस्तुतकर्ते संजय घोडावत यांच्या ताफ्यात या सर्व गाडय़ा आहेत. निर्माते संतोष नवले, हसमुख हिरानी आणि जी. प्रशांत यांच्या सहकार्यामुळे कोणतीही तडजोड न करता चित्रपट पूर्ण करण्यात आला. राजवाडे यांनी सांगितले की, ‘मी शिवाजीराजे भोसले..’ किंवा ‘हरिश्चंद्राची फॅक्टरी’ इत्यादी चित्रपटांनी दाखवून दिले आहे की, योग्य प्रकारे पैसा वापरला गेला तर चित्रपटाला व्यावसायिक यशही मिळू शकते. त्यामुळे सध्या निर्मात्यांचा मराठी चित्रपटाकडे पाहण्याचा दृष्टिकोन बदलू लागला आहे. ‘गैर’ या चित्रपटात अमृता खानविलकर, तेजस्विनी पंडित, इला भाटे, उदय टीकेकर, अमिता खोपकर यांनी महत्त्वाच्या भूमिका साकारल्या आहेत. हा थरारपट नोव्हेंबर महिन्याच्या पहिल्या आठवडय़ात प्रदर्शित होणार आहे.

Men who made the Muhurat of a Maharathi film memorable...

It is a time when even the most optimistic and the dwindling number of positive thinkers are talking about the growing gloom all around and darkness looming large all over the industry. Everyone is talking about how the global recession is having a damaging impact in every office, studio, corridor and even gully where cinema is a way of life. There are people seeing dark visions of D-day drawing closer. And there has been no talk about new films being launched. There were no parties to celebrate any kind of success because there was no sign of success being seen anywhere. Events like being invited to the “auspicious” launching of a film or a “muhurat” as it is called were slowly going out of fashion and the atmosphere was filled with an eerie feeling of insecurity. It was in this kind of ‘world’ that we were surprised to see a rare bright spark of light at Future Studios owned by the ambitious and dynamic woman of power, the woman of today and tomorrow, Mrs. Mona Kapoor to the “muhurat” of a film at last. It was not a Hindi film. It was a Marathi film called ‘Gaiir’. It was like the good old times when some of the celebrities from Hindi film walked in to grace the occasion. Their coming in gave many in the studio that the better times for Hindi films was coming back. But, no, the celebrities where guests walking in to wish a bright future for a Marathi film being made by a team of enthusiastic and energetic young men. Among the big names who were welcomed by the leader of the team were the famous three brothers in white, directors Abbas- Mustan and their brother Hussain Burmawala, the editor of all the films directed by his brothers A & M, writer- director Anees Bazmee, Ananth (Talent Unlimited) Narayan Mahadevan and above all the busy as busy can be big man of the business of entertainment, Shyam Shroff of Shringar Films and the pioneer of the multiplex movement in India.

The three brothers in white who have been names behind some of the most successful films during the last two decades traveled from the other end of the city and still were the first to reach in spite of the snarling traffic jam which is slowly becoming a sickening way of life in the city. They marveled at the huge set put up for a Marathi film. They were happy to know that the young director, Satish Rajwade who had earlier made a comedy was now directing a suspense thriller which is their favourite genre of film making. Mustan said a good film is a good film and language makes very little difference to the quality of a film. The brothers in white who had heard the one line of ‘Gaiir” were excited about the subject and said they would be waiting to see what shape the young director gave with. They were sure that they would make a good film and said they would be very happy if he made a better film than them.

The ‘muhurat’ shot was a brief affair but according to Prashant Ghaisas, one of the closest well wishers of the team making “Gaiir” it would be a muhurat shot of a Marathi film that would be remembered for long. Amrita Khanvilkar, one of the most promising artists of Marathi and Hindi films faced the camera for the first shot and what followed was as interesting and intense as a scene in a quality thriller. Ananth (talent unlimited) broke the ceremonial coconut, Shyam Shroff sounded the clapper board, Anees Bazmee switched on the camera and the brothers in white directed the shot and it was all over within moments and a memorable moment in Marathi films was canned.

Shyam Shroff, a veteran of several years sounded the clapper board wise because of some technical snag. But he later said something that thrilled the team of ‘Gaiir’. He said any film in which the clapper board was sounded twice during the “muhurat” had always been a major hit and he was confident history would be repeated with ‘Gaiir’ sending of wave of thrill among the members of the team. The director of the film, Satish Rajwade said it was a great day for him to have Abbas-Mustan directing the first shot of his first film as a thriller because he was a great admirer of the men in white since his college days.

The unit of “Gaiir” being made under the banner of Kruti Films went into action, shooting soon after the muhurat and hope to complete the film within three months at a thrilling pace. The film will have four songs and a background score to suit the mood of a thriller.

The film has a very ‘strong’ cast in Sandeep Kulkarni(of ‘Shwaas’ the first Marathi entry at the Oscars), playing a double role, Ankush Choudhary, Amrita Khanvilkar and Tejaswini Pandit in the key roles. Dialogue by Parag Kulkarni, lyrics by Shrirang Godbole, music by Avinash-Vinayak, and cinematography by Suresh Deshmane are the other credits. The film is a Sanjay Ghodavat Group Presentation. The one question the media and the guests wanted an answer to was how the unit managed to get so many celebrities from the world of Hindi films for the ‘muhurat’, of a Marathi film. The suspense stays on. Woh Kaun Tha? Yeh Sab Kaise Hua?

Director Satish Rajwade’s sudden exit from the popular Marathi TV serial “Asambhav” has deprived a good story of its great story teller. Sudhir Raikar spoke to the unassuming talent whose innovative style statement in editing and direction marks a new chapter in Marathi entertainment.
At 34, Satish Rajwade wears the reassuring smile of a seasoned professional. He’s unassuming to the core, unfazed by success and controversies but ask him about his trade and the conviction comes alive in his gleaming eyes. “I love my work. Whatever little I have achieved till date has been the result of my unflinching devotion to my work. Nothing else matters”

Rajwade’s arrival in the entertainment industry seemed destined in an unlikely way, ever since he participated in an acting workshop in suburban Ville Parle as a kid of 12. School and college years were replete with awards and mementos that recognized his acting skills.

“I joined the commerce stream of Mithibai College only for its conducive theatre environment. Thanks to my passion, I acted in over 158 one-act plays in English, Hindi, Marathi and Gujarathi” He reveals.

His first tryst with success came in the form of the Marathi play “All the best” where his co-artiste was class mate Shreyas Talpade, long before the latter stuck gold in tinsel town. “It was director Mahesh Manjrekar, my mentor and well wisher, who was instrumental in offering me the Hindi version of “All the best”. The Marathi version followed, for a good 890 shows.”

During one of these shows, Rajwade won the attention of director Govind Nihalani’s crew. Before he knew, he bagged a role in Nihalani’s offbeat film “Sanshodhan” alongside the likes of Manoj Vajpayee. This was followed by two-bit roles in “Hazaar Chourasi ki Maa” and Manjrekar’s “Vastaav” and “Nidaan”. The association with Nihalani introduced Rajwade to the world of film editing and he found his purpose, waiting for him at the cross roads.

“I suddenly realized this is where the actual film happens. The sheer thrill ignited my passion and I began learning the ropes, assisting Nihalani as a trainee editor sans stipend and conveyance”

This marked the second innings of Rajwade – as a director. His debut happened through a music album “Na Jaane Kyun” starring model Samir Dharmadhikari. The album was well received and the producers, happy with the unexpected success, urged Rajwade to direct a Hindi film.

“I suggested a cost effective route in the form of a Marathi film – such that if it bombed, the loss, like the profit, would be lower. This argument got the buy-in and work on “Mrigjal” began.” But the cakewalk ended there.

Rajwade never realized “Mrigjal” could be such a litmus test of his tenacity. At the eleventh hour, he found his prospective screen play writers shying away. “In the heat of the moment, I wrote the story myself. If this was not enough, my cameraman did a vanishing act – I had to pull my personal contacts to rope in Suhas Gujarathi at the last minute”

Even as Rajwade took things in his stride with bated breath, “Mrigjal” bagged 23 awards including story, screenplay and cinematography – all products of accidental afterthought. This was the first grand proof of Rajwade’s genius.

“Mrigjal” won critical acclaim for Rajwade but the offers that followed were not heartening. They came either from fly-by-night operators trying to make hay or from one-time directors looking to utilize government grants, employing shoe-string budgets only to fill their pockets. Rajwade chose to stay away, at the cost of being without work for a substantial time. “It was my family that saw me through these difficult times. I owe my success to them”
Zee TV played his savior too, offering him serials like “Duniyadari” and “Oon Pawus”. Then “Asambhav” happened. And the rest is history.

Rarely has any Marathi serial won worldwide attention for the quality of its production. It was Rajwade’s astute direction and debutant Chinmay Mandlekar’s dialogues that has made “Asambhav” such a huge hit, even among non-maharashtrian households. For an audience nauseating in the overdose of mindless melodrama, “Asambhav” proved a breather. In a record achievement, it bagged five awards at the 33rd Radio and Television Advertising Practitioners’ Association of India (RAPA) awards function. The serial won Rajwade celebrity fans including the veteran composer Pyarelal of Laxmikant-Pyarelal fame who called him to his residence to congratulate him.

The story deals with the controversial and tabooed theme of rebirth but thanks to Rajwade’s treatment, the story is an entertaining mix of tradition and innovation. On one hand, it upholds traditional values seeped in religious thought. On the other, it questions beliefs and dogmas. In exploring the abnormal, normal and the paranormal, all in the same breath, it does not make any exclusive claims to truth.
Rajwade intersperses a dark sinister look of a racy whodunit plot and a sober family drama with amazing flair and authority. The serial does lose its rhythm at times, led by a wayward storyline and some mediocre players, but few enduring performances – notably that of Sharvari Patankar (Priya), Sagar Talashilkar (Chandu), Kishore Kadam (Saranjame), Chinmay Mandlekar (Abhimaan), Rajwade himself (Inspector Bhonsale) and to some extent, Anand Abhyankar (Dinanath Shastri) - are of such high quality that they unknowingly raise the bar for Marathi television, otherwise known for its shallow production values.

In a recent development, Rajwade has chosen to part ways with the team, close on the heels of Mandlekar’s exit. He asserts his reasons are purely personal and do not stem from any hostile difference of opinion with the producers, as media reports blatantly conclude. Though emotional, he is not bitter in the aftermath of the separation.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed the “Asambhav” experience and I am indebted to Nikhil Sane of Zee Marathi for this wonderful opportunity. I also thank my well wishers and the audience from the world over who have appreciated my work” he acknowledges.
His admirers want him back as the captain of the “Asambhav” ship and they have formed fan clubs on social networking sites like Orkut, urging the producers to call back their “director” hero.
For Rajwade however, this exit, though painful, is not a full stop. He is busy on some interesting projects and chooses to look ahead. One of his much-talked about Hindi venture was “Akhand” – a story set in pre-independent India that was to cast super star Akshay Kumar in a negative role, besides Abhishek Bachchan and Suneil Shetty in pivotal roles. “Unfortunately, the project had to be shelved. But the subject being so close to my heart, I hope to revive it soon. I keep my fingers crossed”
“Akhand” or no “Akhand”, “Asambhav” or no “Asambhav”, Satish Rajwade has arrived. A director by choice, he has no qualms about sacrificing the fine actor in him. In the process, he brings with him such finesse which would make the stalwarts proud.

गेली दोन वर्षं दररोज न चुकता साडेआठ वाजता टीव्हीवर 'असंभव' मालिका लावून बसणाऱ्या मराठी प्रेक्षकांना गेले दोन आठवडे 'अभिमान सरंजामे' आणि 'इन्स्पेक्टर विक्रांत भोसले' यांचे दर्शनच झाले नाही. ही कॅरॅक्टर्स गेली कुठे, याबाबत प्रेक्षकांच्या मनात शंकेची पाल चुकचुकली असतानाच 'अभिमान' चिन्मय मांडलेकर यांनी पटकथा, संवादलेखक म्हणून तर 'विक्रांत' सतीश राजवाडे यांनी दिग्दर्शक म्हणून 'असंभव'मधून अंग काढून घेतल्याचे खात्रीशीररित्या समजले आहे. त्यामुळे, या गूढ मालिकेचे गूढ अजून वाढले आहे.
लोकप्रियतेच्या शिखरावर असणारी 'असंभव' दोन महिन्यांत संपणार, अशी बातमी 'मुंबई टाइम्स'ने दिली होती. तेव्हा 'झी मराठी'ने याचा इन्कार केला होता. मालिका महत्त्वाच्या वळणावर आली असताना अभिमान आणि विक्रांत गायब झाले आहेत. हा कथेचाच भाग असेल, असे वाटत असेल, तर मालिकेची श्रेयनामावली पाहा. लेखक चिन्मय मांडलेकर आणि दिग्दर्शक सतीश राजवाडे यांची नावे दोन दिवसांपासून तिथूनही गायब आहेत. या दोघांनी महिन्याभरापूवीर्च ही मालिका सोडली असल्याची कबुली दिलीय.
'निर्मात्यांशी काही गोष्टीत मतभेद झाल्यामुळे आम्ही दोघांनी मालिका सोडण्याचा निर्णय घेतला',असे स्पष्टीकरण चिन्मयने दिले. मात्र निर्माती पल्लवी जोशी यांनी याचा इन्कार केला. 'ही मालिका आहे. एकच दिग्दर्शक शेवटपर्यंत राहण्याची गरज नाही. प्रत्येक मालिकेचे टेक्निशियन, कॉस्चुम डिझायनरही बदलत असतात. तेव्हा हा काही मोठा बदल नाही आणि आमच्यात काही वाद झालेले नाहीत,' असं त्या म्हणाल्या. 'निर्माती आणि आम्ही काम करण्यासाठी एक कालावधी ठरवला होता. तो संपला. काही गोष्टींवर चर्चा केली. काही गोष्टी व्यवस्थित होऊ शकत नाहीत, असं लक्षात आलं आणि आम्ही मालिकेतून बाहेर पडलो. पण आमच्यात कोणत्याही प्रकारचे भांडण झालेलं नाही', असं सतीशने सांगितलं. कुटुंबाची अतिरिक्त जबाबदारी हेही कारण त्याने दिलं.
गेली दोन वर्षांची यशस्वी टीम बदलण्याचं कारण विचारलं असता पल्लवी म्हणाल्या की कधी कधी चिन्मयचं स्क्रिप्ट तयार नसायचं, ते आम्ही इतरांकडून करून घ्यायचो. कधी सतीश डिरेक्ट करायचा नाही तर त्याचा असिस्टण्ट डिरेक्टर करायचा, असंही झालंय. अशा गोष्टी होतच असतात.' सतीशने मात्र 'मी ४०९ भाग एकटा उभा राहून पूर्ण केले आहेत. कधीच असिस्टण्ट डिरेक्टरवर जबाबदारी दिली नाही. एका वेळी मी एकच काम करतो. त्यामुळे दुसऱ्या कामासाठी गैरहजर राहण्याचा प्रश्ान्च येत नाही
